Economic Impacts of Cultural Events on Local Economies: An Input—Output Analysis of the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival
2005
This paper examines the economic impacts of Finland's Kaustinen Folk Music Festival. The impacts are calculated on output, demand and wages, employment and on national and regional taxes. The results indicate, first, that the effects of the festival on output are about ₠1.7 million. Kaustinen can also be seen as a good investment for the local municipality, as regional tax revenues increased by about ₠65,600 in the year studied, while the annual subsidy was ₠40,365. From the perspective of the Keski-Pohjanmaa region as a whole, the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival has a substantial impact on regional incomes through subsidies (about one-fifth of the costs of the festival is offset by subsidie…

Music festivals as mediators and their influence on consumer awareness
2020
Abstract Cultural products compete for public awareness in markets with high uncertainty, oversupply and a short product life cycle. Altogether, this means that only a small fraction of all releases generate the necessary consumer awareness to achieve a significant commercial success. This paper aims at identifying the informational function music festivals serve in cultural markets and how it translates into consumer discovery of cultural supply. To do so, we empirically measure informational spillover effects to performers at an established music festival. We hypothesize that this effect stems from the reputation attached to the brand equity of cultural organizations, is asymmetric, as it…
Live and online music festivals in the COVID-19 era: analysis of motivational differences and value perceptions
2022
Purpose – This research has three objectives: to identify whether there are motivational differences between attending live and online music festivals, to know whether these motivations vary according to the sociodemographic characteristics of the attendees, and to analyse the perceived value-satisfaction-behavioural intention chain for both types of festivals. Theoretical framework – We base our research on push and pull factor theory of motivations. We analyse push motivational factors behind participation in live and online music festivals. Push factors are psychological benefits that individuals perceive they will gain from attending events, such as entertainment, socialization and esca…

Analyzing online search patterns of music festival tourists
2020
Music festivals, as cultural events that induce tourism flows, intermediate both the cultural and travel experience. The present study analyzes online search behavior of potential attenders to a music festival. We hypothesize that the search process reveals latent patterns of behavior of cultural tourists planning to attend music festivals. To this end, information from Google Trends on queries related to three popular music festivals is used to build a network of search topics. Based on it, alternative exponential random graph model specifications are estimated. Findings support the general result of mediated information flows: music festivals induce planning and traveling queries. Howeve…
Musiikkifestivaalit oppivina organisaatioina : tutkimuskohteina Savonlinnan Oopperajuhlat ja Haapavesi Folk Music Festival
2012
Tutkim…
The Sanremo-Effect. Exposing Rape, Normalizing Sexism.
2021
